Acapulco Mexico

In 1999, a group of teachers and leaders at the Maranatha Presbyterian Church in Acapulco got together in the hopes of starting a Christian school. Their reasoning was that the choice of schools in Acapulco are mainly secular public schools which are overcrowded or private Catholic schools where children must participate in practices contrary to their Protestant Christian beliefs. In August 2000, New Horizon Christian School opened it's doors to 7 students.  Today, the school has14 staff and 70 students (Preschool - 6th grade) meeting in every available room at Maranatha Presbyterian Church. Twenty-five students are from a nearby Children's Home, 20 students are from church familes and 25 students are from outside of the church.  Bartlett UMC began their support to New Horizon by raising money for student scholarships. The support increased during Spring Break of 2005, when a 15 member team of adults and youth went to Acapulco to teach a 3 day English Camp on Tennessee. Afternoons and evenings were spent building student and teacher's desks, painting and setting up a computer lab.  In return, the team was rewarded with a student's presentation of their home state of Guerrero.    More rewarding, though were the friendships the team members built with the students and teachers. BUMC looks forward to their continued support of New Horizon Christian School where we have the opportunity to help spread the name of Jesus Christ into an area of the world that is thirsting for the Good News.
