The Counseling Center at Bartlett United Methodist Church:
Professionally Integrating Psychotherapy and Spirituality
Caring and counseling have always been a part of the process by which the Church extends the love of God to persons with emotional, relational or spiritual hurt. Many persons prefer to find the counseling help they need within the faith community, where their values and spiritual concerns are understood and utilized as integral parts of the counseling process. We at the Counseling Center believe in the healing value of integrating faith with counseling.
Seeking to fulfill that mission, the Counseling Center provides confidential, faith-based counseling, education and consultation services to individuals, couples and families. To make an appointment, call the Center at 384-4035 or email us at counseling@bartlettumc.org. An initial session is provided by the church to members at no charge. We provide counseling for:

How To Find A Counselor
Most of us do not think about counseling services until we need them. Feeling a sense of urgency or even crisis, we may then be confronted by a list of unknown persons supplied by our insurance company or the phone directory. A better approach is to solicit the advice of friends who have been helped with their problems. If they utilized a professional helping relationship, consider talking to the professional yourself. Your clergy person or school counselor may also know other helping professionals with good reputations. Generally, you are looking for someone who has clinical expertise in your issues and someone with whom you can form a trusting therapeutic relationship. Most counselors will be happy to talk with you before an initial appointment about their experience helping persons with problems like yours. At a first counseling session you will get a good feeling for your compatibility with your potential counselor and a provisional action plan. If the relationship helps, stay with it. If it doesn't seem like a good fit, look for another counselor. At the Counseling Center, we will assist you in finding a counselor that meets your needs.

How Much Will Counseling Cost?
For some, the biggest obstacle to getting the care we need is cost. Counselors usually charge by the session, which typically lasts about an hour. The fees for a private counseling session range widely. In Memphis, counselors typically charge $65 - $95 a session at the master's level and $95 - $150 a session at the doctoral level. Of course, most persons use their health insurance to help pay for counseling. Insurance benefits vary widely and change often. Ask your insurance provider about their particular coverage or "behavioral health benefits" for outpatient counseling, specifically your deductible, your co-pay, and your maximum number of sessions. Also ask about the cost difference between using counselors "in network" (counselor who agree to work at a certain rate and within certain rules are "in the network ") and counselors "out of network." Our services at the Counseling Center are recognized by most major insurance providers and we will file insurance for you. If you do not have insurance for a private counselor, community mental health centers, community nonprofits, and counselor training programs at universities or hospitals may be options and may offer a sliding scale fee for services. At the Counseling Center, we will work with you to help you find the counseling you need at an affordable rate.
